ESTILL, S.C. — A prominent South Carolina attorney was shot and injured while changing a tire on the side of a rural road months after his wife and son were shot to death.
Alex Murdaugh was driving a black Mercedes Benz SUV to Charleston when he had to stop on the side of Salkehatchie Road to fix a flat tire, The State reported.
A truck passed by before turning around, and someone inside shot at him. Murdaugh was able to call 911 around 1:34 p.m. Murdaugh suffered a superficial wound to the head and was taken to a hospital for treatment, NBC News reported.
“We expect him to make a full recovery,” a family spokesperson said.
Murdaugh serves as a part-time prosecutor in the state’ 14th Circuit, the same office where his father, grandfather and great-grandfather worked.
On June 7, Murdaugh found his wife Maggie, 52, and son Paul, 22, shot to death near dog kennels at their hunting lodge. Investigators have not indicated a motive or suspect, NBC News reported.
When Paul Murdaugh was killed, he was awaiting trial for a boat crash that killed a 19-year-old woman. Murdaugh was allegedly boating under the influence. After his death, state police started looking into the investigation to see if anyone tried to keep officials from charging Murdaugh.
After their deaths, state police had also reopened a 2015 hit-and-run investigation in which a victim’s mother believed Paul Murdaugh could have been involved. Authorities have not indicated why those investigations were reopened.
A family spokesperson said: “(The Murdaugh family) has suffered more than one family could ever imagine.”
