Recall alert: Cut fruit from Walmart recalled due to possible listeria contamination

The Food and Drug Administration has announced a recall of cut fruit that was sold at Walmart in nine states.

The fruit, which was sold under the brand Country Fresh, included cut or sliced apples, grapes, mangos, pineapples and cantaloupe, the FDA said in a news release.

Equipment that is used near where the fruit is packaged was contaminated by listeria monocytogenes, the FDA said.

If infected by listeria, symptoms include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. It can also cause miscarriages or stillbirths in pregnant women. It also is dangerous for young children, frail or elderly people or those with weakened immune systems.

The fruit, which was sold in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas, has “best if used by dates” between Oct. 3 and Oct. 11.

There have not been any cases of illness reported relating to the recall.

Walmart is removing the recalled fruit from store shelves, the FDA reported.
