Recall alert: Purina recalling brand of dog food over excess vitamin D concerns

Nestlé Purina PetCare Company is recalling select lots of Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental prescription dry dog food because of potentially high levels of vitamin D.

The voluntary recall comes after the company was notified about two cases of a dog exhibiting signs of vitamin D toxicity after consuming eating the food. The dogs recovered after they stopped eating the food.

Vitamin D toxicity may include vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, and excessive drooling, according to Purina.

The dry dog food being recalled was distributed by prescription only through veterinary clinics, Purina Vet Direct, Purina for Professionals, and other select retailers.

These bags of food with the UPC Code and Production Code below should be thrown out immediately:

Purina is telling those who purchased the food to stop using it immediately and dispose of it where no other animal, including wildlife, can get to it.

If your dog is showing symptoms of vitamin D toxicity -- weight loss, excessive drooling, vomiting, loss of appetite or increased thirst or urination – contact your veterinarian.

No other Purina pet care products are affected.
