Source code is the fundamental computer code on which the social network runs.

According to the Times, Twitter’s source code was posted on GitHub, an internet hosting service for software development.

“It was unclear how long the leaked code had been online, but it appeared to have been public for at least several months,” a New York Times article said. Despite that, the NYT article said Twitter “executives were only recently made aware of the source code leak.”

The court filings said that Twitter had asked GitHub to take down the code where it was posted. GitHub took down the posting and told Twitter that the content had been disabled, according to the filing. Twitter also asked the court to identify the alleged infringer or infringers who posted Twitter’s source code, the Times reported.

“The purpose for which Twitter’s DMCA Subpoena is sought is to obtain the identity of an alleged infringer or infringers, and such information will only be used for the purpose of protecting Twitter’s rights,” Twitter wrote in its filing to the court.
