WASHINGTON — A Capitol police officer died Friday afternoon after a driver rammed a vehicle into him and another officer near a checkpoint outside the Capitol complex, acting U.S. Capitol police Chief Yogananda Pittman said.

Authorities said officers opened fire on the driver after he got out of the vehicle and brandished a knife. The driver has since died, Pittman confirmed.
