ESCANABA, Mich. — A Walmart in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan was forced to close briefly on Friday after a man allegedly wielding a hammer damaged property, authorities said.
According to the Escanaba Department of Public Safety, officers arriving at the store encountered a man who was “actively damaging property in the store,” WJMN-TV reported.
Police arrived shortly after 4 p.m. EDT and took the man into custody, according to WLUC.
Videos on social media showed a man allegedly smashing jewelry cases with a hammer while Walmart associates directed customers toward the store’s exits, the television station reported.
There were no reports of injuries, according to WLUC.
The store was closed but reopened on Saturday morning, the store wrote in a Facebook post. Store officials originally had hoped to reopen the store Friday night but could not due to “an unfortunate circumstance.”
It was unclear what led to the incident. Police did not release the name of the man taken into custody.
