WASHINGTON — We’ve hit a new record -- with more than 143 million vaccines administered against COVID-19 in the United States.

According to the the Centers for Disease and Control and Prevention, the seven-day average is now around 2.7 million shots administered every day across the country.

A little more than 28% of the population has received at least one dose of the vaccine, and 15%, or around 52 million people, are now fully vaccinated.

More than three dozen states are now making vaccines available to anyone 16 years and older.

But as the US inches towards herd immunity, some states are also seeing increases in COVID-19 cases.

Health officials are worried about Americans becoming more lax and letting their guard down, which could result in a fourth COVID surge.
