“There are very few words to adequately describe the life and career of Doc Emrick, so let’s let his own words carry the day as he announces his retirement,” NBC Sports tweeted along with a video highlighting Emrick’s career.

Emrick, 74, started out the video talking about where his career began: in Pittsburgh.

“It was 50 years ago this fall, with pen and pad in hand, at old Civic Arena in Pittsburgh I got my first chance to cover the National Hockey League,” he said.

Speaking to the New York Post on Sunday night, Emrick said, “I hope I can handle retirement OK, especially since I’ve never done it before. But I’ve just been extremely lucky for 50 years. And NBC has been so good to me, especially since the pandemic, when I was allowed to work from home in a studio NBC created.”
