Former Steelers running backs coach will be new head coach of Pittsburgh Maulers USFL team

Kirby Wilson

PITTSBURGH — A former Pittsburgh Steelers running backs coach will serve as the new head coach of the Pittsburgh Maulers USFL team.

Kirby Wilson will serve in a head coaching capacity for the first time in his 36 year career.

He worked with the Steelers for several seasons starting in 2007 as Mike Tomlin took over after Bill Cowher announced his retirement. During his time in Pittsburgh, Wilson worked with players like Willie Parker, Mewelde Moore and Rashard Mendenhall.

Wilson was part of the Steelers when they won Super Bowl XLIII in 2008.

In January 2012, Wilson was badly burned in an early morning house fire and was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital for treatment. He was back coaching by May that year.
