Former Steelers running backs coach will be new head coach of Pittsburgh Maulers USFL team

PITTSBURGH — A former Pittsburgh Steelers running backs coach will serve as the new head coach of the Pittsburgh Maulers USFL team.

Kirby Wilson will serve in a head coaching capacity for the first time in his 36 year career.

He worked with the Steelers for several seasons starting in 2007 as Mike Tomlin took over after Bill Cowher announced his retirement. During his time in Pittsburgh, Wilson worked with players like Willie Parker, Mewelde Moore and Rashard Mendenhall.

Wilson was part of the Steelers when they won Super Bowl XLIII in 2008.

In January 2012, Wilson was badly burned in an early morning house fire and was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital for treatment. He was back coaching by May that year.

Player selection to happen in late February

USFL officials said player selection meetings will take place Feb. 22 and 23 with training camps opening Monday, March 21. Each team will have a 38-man active roster and seven player practice squad.

The regular season kicks off April 16 and will run through mid-June with the playoffs following. Each team will play a 10 game schedule in a central location that has yet to be announced.

Fox Sports will carry 22 of the 43 games with 12 broadcast on Fox and 10 on FS1. NBC Sports will feature the other 21 games, with eight on NBC, nine on USA Network and four on Peacock.

Games will be played on Saturdays and Sundays with some special broadcasts planned for Fridays and Mondays.
