Ed Hochuli, perhaps the NFL’s most recognizable referee, is retiring, the league announced Tuesday.
Al Riveron, senior vice president of officiating, tweeted the news.

Hochuli, 67, known for his detailed explanations of rulings and wearing a tight uniform that accentuates his muscular build, retires after 28 years in the league. His son, Shawn, a back judge, has been promoted to referee to replace him.
Hochuli is a partner in an Arizona law firm.
