Bill Cowher, two other Pittsburgh Steelers greats named finalists for Pro Football Hall of Fame

Former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher is one of two other Steelers legends who were named as finalists for this year’s Pro Football Hall of Fame class.

Cowher joins fellow coach Buddy Parker, Super Bowl-winning safety Donnie Shell and Pitt and Freedom High School alumnus Jimbo Covert as local legends who were among 38 finalists announced Thursday.

Cowher and Parker are among eight coaches, and Covert and Shell among 20 players (given a “seniors” designation) joining 10 “contributors” (owners, executives, etc.) from which 15 will be chosen for a special enlarged class to be inducted next year alongside five modern-era players who will be inducted in the more traditional manner.

The finalists announced Thursday are vying for one of 15 spots part of a Centennial Class in conjunction with the NFL’s 100th anniversary.

Cowher won 161 games (counting the postseason) as Steelers coach, including Super Bowl XL. A Crafton native, he led the Steelers from 1992-2006.
