Steelers sign punter Colquitt, release Berry

PITTSBURGH — The Steelers on Monday signed veteran punter Dustin Colquitt, releasing incumbent Jordan Berry just one week before they open the regular season against the Giants at MetLife Stadium.

The move is yet another veteran addition for the team in the past two days. Sunday, the Steelers signed safety Sean Davis following his release by Washington and claimed quarterback Josh Dobbs off waivers from the Jaguars.

The move to sign Colquitt, however, adds a player with Super Bowl experience. Colquitt, 38, spent his first 15 seasons in the NFL with the Chiefs, winning a Super Bowl there last season.

He and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and guard Stefen Wisniewski, who has won rings with the Chiefs and Eagles in two of the past three seasons, all have Super Bowl experience.

Colquitt, son of former Steelers punter Craig Colquitt, averaged 44.3 yards per punt last season. But he attempted only 48 kicks, fewest of any punter in the NFL who was on a roster all 16 games. For his career, Colquitt has averaged 44.8 yards per kick.
