Steelers trim roster down to 53 ahead of regular season, some notable players let go

PITTSBURGH — There may not be any preseason games this season, but that doesn’t mean rosters aren’t being trimmed down.

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced who made their 53-man roster to start the 2020 regular season, and there were a few notable players who were let go.

The noticeable cuts include wide receiver Ryan Switzer, rookie defensive back Antoine Brooks Jr. and defensive lineman Daniel McCullers. Also among the cuts are quarterback Paxton Lynch, running back Trey Edmunds and punter Corliss Waitman.

Last season, Switzer tallied eight receptions for 27 yards. In his two seasons in Pittsburgh, the wideout finished with 280 yards and one touchdown.

The Steelers drafted Brooks Jr. in the seventh round of the 2020 draft. The five other members of the Steelers 2020 draft class (WR Chase Claypool, LB Alex Highsmith, RB Anthony McFarland, OL Kevin Dotson and DT Carlos Davis) made the roster.

Some players may be brought back throughout the season as COVID-19 continues to cause issues throughout the country.

According to the team, Pittsburgh will be able to sign 16 players to its practice squad beginning on Sunday. Of those 16, six of them can be vested veterans, players with four or more years in the league.
