‘Rivalry Rematch’ game coming to PPG Paints featuring U.S., Canada Women’s hockey teams

PITTSBURGH — From Beijing to Pittsburgh, PPG Paints will be home to one of the fiercest rivalries on the ice: Team USA vs. Team Canada.

Penguins officials announced Tuesday that the Women’s Hockey teams from each country will take the ice at 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 12.

Fresh from winning medals at the 2022 Beijing Olympic Games, both squads featured in the most-watched hockey game in the U.S. this year. It surpassed any NHL game so far this season and was the second most-watched hockey game in the U.S. since 2019.

The American team features Amanda Kessel (Phil Kessel’s sister), Kendall Coyne-Schofield, Hilary Knight and Alex Cavallini. Knight holds the record for most Olympic games played by an American female hockey player.

The Canadian roster, which took gold in Beijing, features Marie-Philip Poulin, Sarah Nurse, Brianne Jenner and Natalie Spooner. Nurse set an Olympic record for points scored in a single tournament.

Special guests behind the American bench for the game include Cammi Granato and Emily Matheson. Granato was the first woman to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame and is the current assistant GM of the Vancouver Canucks. Matheson won gold with Team USA in the 2018 Olympics. On the Canadian bench, Cassie Campbell-Pascall and Jayna Hefford will serve as guest coaches. Campbell-Pascall was the first woman to provide color commentary on Hockey Night in Canada. Hefford has four Olympic gold medals and is also in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
