WASHINGTON, Pa. — The first pitch of this year’s PONY League World Series happened in Washington tonight.

Teams from China, Mexico and Germany are going up against seven teams from the United States.

All of them are hoping to win it all in the birthplace of PONY baseball, right here in Western Pennsylvania.

It started 65 years ago as the Protect Our Neighborhood Youth League.

“There were six teams in that 1951 season,” said Bob Gregg, the chairman of the PONY League World Series. "There are now over 500,000 players in 30 different countries all around the world, all battling to come to Washington, Pennsylvania."

In the first round of elimination Sunday, the Johnstown, Pennsylvania team fell to Peters Township.

The six-day tournament wraps up on Wednesday with the Championship Game.
