How to get to Pittsburgh's airport

Pittsburgh International Airport, formerly known as Greater Pittsburgh International Airport, is roughly 20 miles outside the city's downtown area. The airport opened in 1952 and now serves more than 8 million passengers annually.

Getting to Pittsburgh's airport is not difficult if you plan ahead. Use this guide for driving directions, accessing the airport via public transportation and parking.

Driving directions

Getting to Pittsburgh International Airport is easy no matter what direction you're coming from. If traveling to the airport from the north, take southbound Interstate 79 and Exit 59B, then take Interstate 376 west toward the airport. From the south, take northbound Interstate 79 and Exit 59B, taking Interstate 376 west toward the airport.

Getting to the airport from downtown is as simple as going through the Fort Pitt tunnels to Interstate 376. Once on Interstate 376, it is approximately 14 miles to Exit 53 for the airport. 

Public transportation

For residents who'd like a more cost-effective way of getting to the airport, the Port Authority of Allegheny County offers bus service from downtown Pittsburgh, Oakland and other locations via 28X Airport Flyer. The bus runs between the airport and Duquesne and Carnegie Mellon universities in addition to downtown Pittsburgh every 30 minutes.

To catch the bus from the airport, proceed to the area outside of Door 6 near the baggage claim area. Fare for the 28X Airport Flyer is $2.50 with a ConnectCard of ConnectTix or $2.75 in cash. Where to park

If driving to the airport and leaving your car while you journey on in your travels, you'll need to utilize any of the several parking areas at Pittsburgh International Airport. Available parking includes reserved parking, extended economy parking, long-term parking, short-term parking and valet parking.

Reserved parking ensures your spot is secured before you even arrive. The extended economy lot, inclusive of the cellphone parking lot for airport pickups, is free the first hour, $2 the second hour and after two hours the rate of $8 per day goes into effect. Rates for long-term parking is $3 per hour and caps at $14 daily. Short-term parking is $1 for the first hour, $4 each additional hour and caps at $24 daily.

There is also disabled parking available as well as oversized vehicle parking and valet service. For electric car owners, there are six charging stations located in the short-term parking garage. Featured nonstop destinations include Florida, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Paris, New Orleans, San Francisco, Frankfurt, Germany, Myrtle Beach, Reykjavik, Iceland and Toronto. The airport consists of two buildings: the Landside and Airside terminals.
