Frick Park

The largest of Pittsburgh's historic regional parks, Frick Park has a variety of activities to keep kids happy and busy. It's an oasis from the city's hustle and bustle and has extensive trails to explore. Frick also has red clay tennis courts, baseball fields and the state's only public lawn bowling green. Don't miss the Blue Slide Playground, which has castle-themed playground equipment and a large slide carved into the hillside. Bring a piece of cardboard for maximum sliding enjoyment.

Children's Museum of Pittsburgh

The Children's Museum of Pittsburgh has many hands-on exhibits that let kids learn while they're having fun. They can explore the Makeshop, which features woodworking, circuitry, stop-motion animation and more. Or let them get wet as they learn about channels, showers, spouts and whirlpools. There are activities for kids of all ages, including a toddler area that lets them play with trains, light pegs, sand and bubbles.

One of the few inclines remaining in the country, Duquesne dates back to 1877 and has been since restored. Hop aboard a century-old wooden cable car to see amazing views of downtown Pittsburgh, and you'll be able to also visit the incline's interior to see how it all works. The upper station has a museum of Pittsburgh history, so kids can also learn about the city as well as about other inclines. You may also want to pick up a unique Pittsburgh souvenir in the gift shop.

One of the country's few attractions that combines a zoo and aquarium, kids will love seeing animals and learning more about them. The zoo has a new feature in Jungle Odyssey, which lets you discover ocelots, anteaters, a pygmy hippo and more. In the aquarium, you can visit Water's Edge, which is home to a polar bear and sea otter. The kids will also get a kick out seeing penguins as they march to play in the snow or go for a waddle outside the aquarium.

A historic Pittsburgh attraction, Kennywood was founded in 1898 and has had many updates since, making it a fun destination for generations of local families. Ride one of the amusement park's six roller coasters, or take the younger kids to enjoy the rides in the Kiddieland section. Other rides include Auto Race, the Wave Swinger and the Pirate. Families will also have the chance to enjoy shows that include all types of music or twists on classic fairy tales.
