Over 21,000 lose power; severe storms cause downed trees, wires

PITTSBURGH — UPDATE 10:45 p.m.: The number of reported power outages dropped significantly in western Pa.

As of 10:30 p.m., Duquesne Light reported 5,698 outages, while First Energy reported 4,046.

UPDATE 8:40 p.m.: More than 21,000 customers are without power across southwestern Pa. as severe storms rolled through the area.

Duquesne Light reported nearly 15,000 outages in Allegheny and Beaver counties, while First Energy (West Penn Power) reported over 7,500 outages spread across our entire viewing area. The most outages reported by First Energy are in Fayette County -- with 2,861.

UPDATE 7:30 p.m.: An Areal Flood Warning has been issued for several counties in the Pittsburgh area.

A viewer sent Channel 11 video of what appeared to be clouds lowering toward the ground as the storms moved through.

UPDATE 7 p.m.: Allegheny County officials are getting reports of flooded roadways in the South Hills, including Route 51 and Lewis Run Road; Saw Mill Run Boulevard and Stewart Avenue in Pittsburgh; and Hawthorne Road and Evergreen Road in the North Hills.

Also, there are vehicles stuck in floodwater on Main Street in Sharpsburg.

UPDATE 6:30 p.m.: The National Weather Service issued severe thunderstorm warnings for Allegheny, Butler, Fayette and Westmoreland counties -- in effect until 7:15 p.m.

Allegheny County officials said storms have caused several downed trees, wires and fired across the area.

The roadway in the area of Clairton Boulevard and North Lewis Run Road has started to flow.

A tree and wires are down at the intersection of Ramsey Avenue and Station Street in Carnegie.

Also, there are transformers on fire on McKnight Road in Ross Township and Center Avenue in Emsworth.

Allegheny County also tweeted that a Crescent house caught fire after being struck by lightning on McGovern Boulevard.

UPDATE 5:47 p.m.: Severe storms are crossing the region this evening with heavy rain and high winds. It’s sparked numerous warnings.

The strongest thunderstorms Friday evening will be capable of heavy rainfall, high wind gusts and small hail.

Lightning is a threat in any T-storm. Stay alert to changing weather conditions. Thunderstorms will continue into tonight with lows in the upper-60s.

Saturday will bring a slight dip in the temps with highs in the low-80s. Scattered showers are possible in the morning with a few T-storms developing in the afternoon, especially north of Pittsburgh. Rain should clear out Saturday night.

It will be a warm and slightly humid day Sunday with scattered afternoon T-storms developing.
