Severe thunderstorms sweep through Southwestern Pa. overnight

PITTSBURGH — Severe thunderstorms swept through Southwestern Pennsylvania Tuesday night into Wednesday morning knocking out power for tens of thousands of people and causing major damage. There were also some tornado warnings issued, although it will take time to determine if any cyclones actually touched down.

UPDATE 3:11 a.m.: The Severe Thunderstorm Watch for our area has been dropped, but rain will continue until around 6 a.m.

UPDATE 2:28 a.m.: Duquesne Light is currently reporting more than 10,000 customers without power. The hardest hit area is Penn Hills, which has more than 1,000 customers without power. Several other communities stretching from the West End through Green Tree and into West Mifflin have more than 500 customers without power.

First Energy is also reporting tens of thousands of customers without power, including more than 20,000 in Westmoreland County and nearly 10,000 in Allegheny County.

UPDATE 1:45 a.m.: The Severe Thunderstorm Warning has spread south into Fayette County as well as farther west into Westmoreland and Indiana counties. It has also been extended until 2:30 a.m.

UPDATE 1:32 a.m.: The Tornado Warning has been canceled early.

UPDATE 1:19 a.m.: A Tornado Warning has been issued for parts of Allegheny and Westmoreland counties until 1:45 a.m.

UPDATE 12:55 a.m.: A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for parts of Allegheny, Beaver and Butler counties until 1:30 a.m.

UPDATE 11:45 p.m.: Several counties in our region, including Allegheny, are under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch, in effect until 6 a.m. Wednesday.
