Storms drop torrential rains; thousands still don’t have power Tuesday

PITTSBURGH — Strong storms brought heavy rain to western Pennsylvania on Monday and led to thunderstorm, tornado and flood warnings. Thousands of people lost power, and outages continue Tuesday.

UPDATE 10:30 a.m.: Duquesne Light is reporting about 670 customers do not have power. About 1,500 West Penn Power customers still do not have power.

UPDATE 6:40 a.m.: A large branch broke off a tree on Forbes Avenue in Squirrel Hill. The road is blocked between Beechwood and Dallas avenues.

UPDATE 5:15 a.m.: Traffic lights are out along Browns Hill Road approaching the Homestead Grays Bridge.

UPDATE 4 a.m.: About 2,500 Duquesne Light customers remain without power Tuesday morning. West Penn Power has about 2,600 customers in western Pennsylvania without power.

UPDATE 10:55 P.M.: Duquesne Light officials estimated that about 7,000 customers lost power at the height of Monday’s storms. They also predict most customers should have power restored by noon on Tuesday.

UPDATE 7:24 p.m.: A Flash Flood Warning has been issued for parts of Washington and southern Allegheny County until 10:30 p.m.

UPDATE 6:57 P.M.: A Flash Flood Warning has been issued for Morgantown, West Virginia.

UPDATE 5:14 p.m.: The Tornado Warning has been canceled for Greene County.

UPDATE 5:04 p.m.: A Tornado Warning has been issued for Greene County until 5:30 p.m.

UPDATE 4:51 p.m.: There are about 10,000 customers without power in the region from West Penn Power. Duquesne Light Company is reporting about 5,000 customers without power.

UPDATE 4:43 P.M.: A new Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for parts of Fayette County.

UPDATE 4:27 p.m.: Duquesne Light officials said they have added additional crews to help restore power.

UPDATE 4:19 p.m.: A new Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for parts of Washington, Allegheny and Fayette counties until 4:45 p.m.

UPDATE 4:14 p.m.: A new Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for parts of Westmoreland County until 4:45 p.m.

UPDATE 4:06 P.M.: A new Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for parts of Allegheny, Westmoreland and Fayette counties until 4:30 p.m.

UPDATE 4:05 p.m.: Due to the strong storms, Allegheny County officials are closing the county pools at North Park, Settlers Cabin, Boyce Park and South Park.

UPDATE 4:04 p.m.: An Areal Flood Advisory has been issued for parts of Allegheny County from the City of Pittsburgh to the north. This means torrential rains have fallen in this area.

UPDATE 3:57 p.m.: A new Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for parts of Westmoreland, Armstrong and Indiana counties until 4:30 p.m.

UPDATE 3:47 p.m.: A new Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for parts of Allegheny and Westmoreland counties.

UPDATE 3:44 p.m.: Allegheny County officials are now starting to get damage reports in from the storms.

Allegheny County officials report that live wires have been pulled down by the storms onto an occupied vehicle in Frazer.

UPDATE 3:38 P.M.: A new Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for parts of Westmoreland, Armstrong and Indiana counties until 4 p.m.

UPDATE 3:34 p.m.: Allegheny County officials are urging people to remain on the line with 911 to report storm damage. Most reports have come in from the northern part of the county so far.

UPDATE 3:30 p.m.: A new Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for parts of Allegheny and Washington counties until 4:15 p.m.

UPDATE 3:26 p.m.: A new Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for parts of the area including the City of Pittsburgh until 4 p.m.

UPDATE 3:23 P.M.: A new Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for parts of Allegheny, Butler, Armstrong and Westmoreland counties until 3:45 p.m.

UPDATE 3:15 P.M.: The Tornado Warning has been allowed to expire. Strong storms with frequent lightning, high winds, and torrential rain are still moving through.

UPDATE 3:08 p.m.: A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for parts of Washington, Beaver and Allegheny counties until 3:30 p.m.

UPDATE 3 P.M.: The Tornado Warning has been extended until 3:15 p.m. for parts of the area.

UPDATE 2:52 P.M.: A Tornado Warning has been issued for parts of Allegheny County, Beaver County and Butler County until 3 p.m.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for the entire viewing area.

The counties include Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Clarion, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Lawrence, Mercer, Somerset, Washington and Westmoreland.

The watch is in effect until 8 p.m.

Be weather aware Monday, as a few rounds of scattered showers and storms will develop in the afternoon and through the early evening hours.

It will be very warm and muggy. This will fuel storms, and a few could become severe.

Main severe weather threats Monday will be strong damaging winds over 60 mph, heavy rain that could lead to minor flooding, hail and an isolated tornado can’t be ruled out.

Showers and clouds will linger early Tuesday morning, but clearing is expected behind this system later in the day. Cooler air will also move in. High temperatures will only reach the upper 60s Tuesday.

It will be comfortable and mild Wednesday, and it will stay dry. There will be fantastic weather for Thursday, with warmer temperatures. Highs will reach the low 80s.

Wednesday through Friday will be great for getting outside, just make sure to grab the sunscreen.
