LIVE UPDATES: Frigid temps dropping into single digits

PITTSBURGH — UPDATE 6:30 a.m. 1/19/20: Bundle up before heading out Sunday as gusty winds will keep wind chill values in the single digits.

Scattered snow showers are possible again during the evening for some areas. North of Butler and areas in the ridges could see a quick 1″-2″.

The cold air stays in place for the start of the work week. Waking up Monday, temperatures will be in the teens with wind chills in the single digits. There is a chance of a few flurries early Monday morning. There will be some breaks in the clouds and some sun by the afternoon.

Temperatures will stay in the mid 20s Monday with wind chills expected in the teens through the day.

UPDATE 5:40 p.m.: PennDOT has lifted all vehicle restrictions from Interstates 86 and 90 in northwestern Pennsylvania.

Additionally, speed restrictions on Interstates 86 and 90 have been lifted, as well as on Interstate 79 from Interstate 80 to Lake Erie.

UPDATE 5 p.m.: You’ll need your rain coat when you head out tonight. Scattered showers are in the forecast this evening as a cold front moves through. Colder air will funnel in and winds will ramp up as well later tonight.

Snow showers are expected overnight and into the morning Sunday. Plan on potential slick spots on untreated surfaces Sunday morning as air temperatures dip to the low 20s. Temperatures Sunday afternoon will only be in the upper teens and low-20s.

Wind gusts up to 35 mph are expected through Sunday, which will put wind chill values in the single digits. Make sure to bundle up!

A new surge of snow will move through Sunday evening as a secondary cold front drops in from the north.

Additional snowfall accumulation of 1-2 inches are possible through Sunday near and north of I-80 and in the ridges. Elsewhere, generally less than one inch is forecast.

UPDATE 4:30 p.m.: Glass Run Road from Joseph Street to Cathell Road is back OPEN hours after an accident caused significant damage to a telephone pole.

Most areas in Western Pa. saw limited accumulation in terms of snowfall. We will see a chance for more snow overnight into Sunday.

UPDATE 1:00 p.m.: A number of counties have been dropped from the Winter Weather Advisory. This includes Allegheny, Beaver, Washington, Greene and parts of Fayette and Westmoreland counties.

Butler County and points north are still under the advisory until 7:00 p.m. Saturday night.

PennDOT has restricted the speed on I-79 from Allegheny County all the way to Erie.

As for this storm system, most of the area is now seeing rain and freezing rain in some spots.

UPDATE 10:30 a.m.: Areas to the north and west of Pittsburgh are still seeing snow falling. The city and points to the south and east are dealing with sleet, freezing rain and rain in spots.

UPDATE 8:30 a.m.: Watch for icy conditions on untreated surfaces as a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain eventually changes to all rain later today.

The heaviest snowfall will be north of Pittsburgh.

UPDATE 7:25 a.m.: Snow is falling to the east in the mountains and ridges, to the north in parts of Butler, Armstrong, Indiana, Clarion, Lawrence and Venango counties and to the west in Ohio.

This brief lull is giving road crews a chance to catch up after the first round of snow moved through.

A wintry mess will start the day Saturday with snow, sleet and freezing rain.

The heaviest snowfall will be north of Pittsburgh where several inches of snow will fall before mixing with freezing rain and eventually changing to rain.

Pittsburgh will see about 1″-2″ of snow before changing to a mix and then rain. Areas south of Pittsburgh will generally have less than an inch of snow before changing to freezing rain and then rain by mid morning.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in place for the entire WPXI-TV viewing area.

Through the afternoon, milder temperatures will change the mix to all rain for most areas. It will be a soggy afternoon with temperatures struggling to 40 degrees. Colder air sweeps in Saturday night with gusty winds and a few snow showers after midnight.
