6 inches of snow possible for Pittsburgh, even more for areas east

PITTSBURGH — A winter storm will bring accumulating snow Wednesday.

Most of the area will be under a winter storm warning from 7 a.m. Wednesday through 7 a.m. Thursday.

Snow will move into the area Wednesday leaving as much as 4-to-7 inches of accumulation around Pittsburgh by Thursday. Areas to the east and in the ridges could be looking at even more. Places in central and northeastern Pennsylvania are looking at 12-to-18 inches of snow by the time this system moves out.

Moderate to heavy bursts of snow will be possible during the afternoon and evening, decreasing visibility and creating hazardous travel conditions. Untreated surfaces will be covered by the evening commute. Even treated roads could become covered due to how heavy the snow could fall.

It looks to be a wet snow so it will be great for kids to build snowmen but bad for travel.

The steady snow will taper to just a few scattered snow showers overnight and into early Thursday, but cold temperatures will allow any snow that did melt to refreeze. Allow extra time Thursday morning in case of icy conditions.
